Our Purpose and Approach
A leading cause of illnesses are mental and neurological disorders. That's the finding of the World Health Organization. Yet, the attention given to this problem is not the same globally. In many developing nations, mental health care is virtually ignored. Mental health care resources are scarce.
We are working to bridge the gap where mental health services are needed. It's especially dramatic in the poorest countries of the world where mental illness accounts for a shorter life expectancy compared to Europe and North America. In the developing nations, where mental health care is nearly invisible, we are matching professionals from every corner of the globe to build or supplement support systems. We're also training ordinary people to assess and treat common mental health ailments like depression and anxiety. Our work includes training lay people to become advocates for mental health needs through educating the community. The goal is to create a network of services and make mental health care more accessible.
In the U.S., our focus is on the international community by bringing awareness of when mental health issues are present. International students and others moving to America can suffer emotional setbacks and culture shock. It's our mission to help Universities identify the signs of mental illness and address the needs through a more culturally approachable method, by offering workshops, consultation and services for their students.
